Saturday July 10, 2010 “Costco is Great for Paleo Diet on a Budget”

One of the problems with shopping at traditional grocery stores is that if you are actually eating what you buy, you will go through your stock fairly quick. Proteins, nuts, fruit; if that is the basis of your diet, it is easy to find yourself making several trips to the grocery store.

For those that have never been to a Costco, they specialize in providing items in bulk. This makes individual trips rather expensive, but in theory you save money in the long run. Costco is great for paleo because chances are you’ve identified the main things you like to eat that are part of the paleo plan. Therefore, life is a lot easier making one trip every few weeks as opposed to several trips a week. For example, I find that I eat a lot of walnuts, chicken sausage and turkey burgers. Costco carries these in bulk packages that save me time and money.

The obvious trade off is that you are sacrificing some freshness for convenience. However, I am a poor law school graduate living on a budget. With that being said, a lot people scoff at Costco because of the $50 a year membership fee. To me that is an acceptable expense considering they sell almost everything there. Electronics, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, etc I really believe you end up saving a lot of money over the course of a year, even with the $50 fee factored in.
