    Paul & Maribel Smith Founders of Get Lifted Gym

    Growing up fitness consumed my life.   All I thought about was how far I could push my body from a very young age.  How much I could lift, how fast and how far I could run, how high I could jump etc.,  sometimes I couldn’t wait until the off season so I could get back to training.  I always experimented with different routines, programs, things I came up with on my own, training regimines of top athletes in all sports, fitness magazine routines; I did it all.  It wasn’t until my last year in the NFL is where I found Crossfit.  It was the 2008 off-season where I was on youtube and looking up workout routines because I had become bored and unmotivated from what I was doing.  I clicked on a girl, Annie Sakamoto, doing squats and muscle ups on rings.  I thought the video was being looped because she never stopped or slowed down for rest, something I never seen going to a global gym.  I clicked on the crossfit.com link at the bottom of the video and found workouts that were coming in daily with video and short explanation of the movements.  The workout of the day or Wod that was on my day of revival was Filthy Fifty.   I looked at all movements on the video archive, learned them real quick,  went to wal mart to buy a doorway pullup bar and a kettle bell,  installed the pullup bar and 1hr. and 45 min later I was layed out on the garge floor after the last rep of double unders (one rep at a time with a leather jumprope)  Long story short I was cut from the team 2008 after an injury riddled season.  I needed to make a living, knew I wanted to personal train people, started a gym in my garage with the permission of my wife and 8 years and 3 gyms later, Maribel and I have become proud owners of GetLifted Gym, HOME OF THE APES!!!!!

      I was first introduced to CrossFit seven years ago by Paul Smith who at the time was WODing out of his garage. Being fortunate to be one of his first clients, I saw firsthand the development of Get Lifted and the strong community that Paul and Maribel have established. It’s hard for me to fully explain the profound impact that Crossfit and the Get Lifted Family has had not only on me but my entire family. Personally, I am fitter and healthier then I have ever been in my entire life.  There was a day I was sitting at the gym preparing to work out when I was overcome by everything Get Lifted had brought to me, it was at that moment that I knew in my mind and heart that I wanted to expand and share that feeling, to have others feel strong, confident that nothing is impossible i have be blessed to have the opportunity to make this dream come true, thank you Paul and Maribel! (APE strong). I believe that an active lifestyle is an essential part of a rich and satisfying life. My aim is to spread that mindset and to have fun helping others benefit from CrossFit just as I have. After 7 years of CrossFit, I am still continuing to learn and improve from Olympic lifting, to endurance, to gymnastics. There’s something about Paul Smith’s training and intensity, that allows this improvement to continue .

        A little over three years ago I found and fell in love with CrossFit.  However, Crossfit was not something I was excited about, it was actually my last effort to try and rehabilitate a broken & displaced back.  Most people would laugh at the idea and would warn you to stay away to avoid further injury, but after researching for month late at night, I mustered the courage to look for a gym locally.  I heard great things about Get Lifted and I set up an assessment.  I walked in week after week feeling extremely intimidated.  I was so lost with the movements and names of different workouts but everyone was very patient with me including the community of other gym goers that were stuck with me in the hour I had chosen to attend.  Soon, I was not only going to the gym because I wanted mobility and better health, which I found after many warnings that Crossfit was dangerous.  I was walking in daily because I felt incredibly welcomed and I had discovered a new way to cope with my stress and my anxiety.  I had no idea that my emotional state could be so directly linked to my ability to walk without pain.  I have been labeled by the medical community as a “disabled vet, 100% full & permanent”.  That label destroyed me emotionally and physically and I allowed it to define me.  Sure the label will always be in my medical records but it no longer defines me.  Get Lifted changed that view I had of myself & my quality of life has changed dramatically thanks to Crossfit.

        So when the opportunity for “Get Lifted North “presented itself, I knew it was a way to help others find what I had found.  I have worked hard to partner up with the Wounded Warrior Project and specifically target others who might face similar struggles with health and fitness.  This has now become my passion.  I want others to experience what it feels like to combine emotional, physical and spiritual wellness.

        CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course!

        Saturday, July 16, 2016 – Sunday, July 17, 2016

        Course Description

        The Level 1 Certificate Course introduces the methodology, terminology, and movements foundational to CrossFit.  The course is comprised of lectures, movement “break out” sessions for hands-on practice, and workouts.  These elements enable participants to better apply the program for personal use and to begin training others with CrossFit.

        This course has a 55 multiple-choice question written test at its conclusion.  Those who meet the requirements below, which include passing the test, earn the designation of: CrossFit Level 1 Trainer.  The test is non-mandatory: a Certificate of Attendance is for those declining to take the test and for those who fail the test.  A Certificate of Attendance does not afford an individual the rights and privileges as those associated with a Level 1 Trainer Certificate.

        Background

        Get Lifted Gym was established in 2008 by 8 year NFL veteran Paul Smith. After his career in the league, he and his wife began CrossFit personal training out of their garage. In only 1 year their clientele outgrew the small space. Get Lifted has expanded 3 times since then and now has the biggest facility in Texas.

        Philosophy

        We pride ourselves in our ability to help each individual achieve their own personal health goals, no matter what condition they’re in. We provide a unique environment in which anyone – children and adults, athletes and non-athletes can be comfortable while learning to build an active lifestyle.

        Experience

        Get Lifted is the ONLY gym from the city to qualify an individual athlete, team, and masters athlete to the CrossFit Games, a true testament to Paul Smith’s custom programming. In only our second year of existence our team was able to compete at a world level. With 8 years as a professional athlete and high level CrossFit competitions under his belt, Paul Smith is ready to help coach you on your way to fitness.

        We understand choosing the right CrossFit gym can be difficult. Here are some points why we are a good match just name a few: We are the biggest CrossFit box in Texas at 23,000 sq feet. We are a planet of all sizes, big, small, young, old, and everything in between. Most importantly we are one gym, one community, and one family. We are also the ONLY gym in El Paso to qualify for the CrossFit Games indivudually and in the team categories. Although we excel in competition, our athletes make up only 1% of our gym population. We pride ourselves in our ability to help each individual achieve their own personal health goals, no mater what condition they’re in. We provide a unique environment in which anyone – children and adults, athletes and non-athletes can be comfortable while learning to build an active lifestyle.

        1st things 1st

        Schedule a free assessment with a trainer on Saturday between 9am-12pm, if you cannot make it on a Saturday please mention that, by following the link at the end of this section, we’ll work with you as best we can. During your assessment you will be able to check out our facilities and get all of your questions answered.
